Abstract: Background: Myocardial infarction is still the leading cause of death in both developed and developing countries regarding to Vietnam. Medication non-adherence is also known worsening clinical outcomes including increased admissions, proceeded chronic conditions, high therapy cost and mortality. Health-related quality of life has been popularly used in assessment of health state among coronary atery disease patients undergone both medical and surgical therapies and also treatment effectiveness. Objective: to evaluate medication adherence level and its correlation with HRQoL in physical health aspects among post-MI patients following up at University medical center, Ho Chi Minh City. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study. 146 participants diagnosed and treated with acute myocardial infarction continued following up at Examination Ward in University Medical center, Ho Chi Minh City from April 1st 2017 to June 30th 2017. Instruments: using Vietnamese version of Morisky Medication Adherence Scale – 8 questions and Physical Component Scale and its subscales in 36-Item Short Form Survey version 2. Data was managed with Epidata 3.1 and analysed with Rsoftware 3.4.0. Results: 69.2% of post-MI patients highly adhered prescribed medications, 28.1% of those with moderate adherence and just 2.7% of those assessed with low adherence. The average scores of physical component scale (PCS), physical function (PF), role of physical health (RP) and general health (GH) were not significantly different among patients with various levels of medication adherence (p>0.05). Yet high adherence to medication related to increased mean scores of bodily pain (BP) with rho=0.2 (p=0.01). Conclusions: Post –MI patients did not completely adhere to prescribed medication and that issue related to multiple factors in need of more study. Patients’ adherence to medication was likely to reduce chest pain but not significant associated with HRQoL in other physical health aspects.
