Colorado University Background: Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease with high incidence in the elderly seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. The quality of life (QOL) in dementia sufferers is often very low and there are differences between being assessed by patients and primary caregivers. Objectives: Primary cargivers’ viewpoint and the patients’ in term of quality of live based on the score of Quality of Life - Alzheimer's disease/QUL – AD scale. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study analyzed and directly interviewed all dementia patients who were being treated at the Geriatrics Department of Medicine University Hospital and the primary caregiver by QOL-AD question bundle from 3/2019 to 6/2019. Results: 60 elderly people with dementia and primary caregivers were interviewed. The average QOL score of patients evaluated by patients themselve was 28.3 (± 6.0) higher than the one caregivers with 24 (± 5.5) (p <0.05; Mann Whitney test), r= 0.895 (p< 0.0001; Pearson test). Thus, there are strong, tight correlation and statistical signigicance between two assessments. Conclusion: The QOL of patients self-assessed by them tends to be higher than that of primary caregivers, which is statistically significant (p <0.05; Mann Whitney test)... Keywords: Dementia, primary caregiver, quality of life.
